Feminism and the Media: A Year in Review

2014 was a year of controversies and scandals – but was it also a good year for feminism? From the Jian Ghomeshi and Bill Cosby revelations to allegations of sexual harassment in Parliament and ‘Gamergate’, it brought issues of sexual assault and harassment to the forefront of public discussion.

The year also saw feminism featured prominently in pop culture and media – with celebrities such as Beyonce and Emma Watson identifying themselves as feminists and proclaiming the importance of gender equality.

As part of UBC Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), The AMS Sexual Assault Support Centre (SASC) and the Terry Project will be hosting a BARtalk panel discussion that will review the past year in feminism and media, and look at what has changed and what we can expect for 2015.

Our expert panel will include:

  • Lucia Lorenzi is a 5th-year PhD candidate in English at UBC. She’s currently working on her dissertation, which focuses on the aesthetics and politics of silence in narratives of sexual violence.
  • Jarrah Hodge is the author of the award-winning feminist blog Gender-Focus.com and writes about gender, politics and labour issues. She has also written blog series for Bitch Magazine and the Vancouver Observer.
  • Scott Anderson is an assistant professor of Philosophy at UBC, who has written on a wide range of topics including ethics, social theory and sex/gender/feminism issues. Read his latest commentary on the sexual harassment cases involving Jian Ghomeshi and Canada’s House of Commons.
  • and moderated by Gordon Katic.
