The Warm Heart of Africa

Pop Quiz. Can you point to Malawi on a map?

If you can’t, you’re not alone. I was born in Malawi, and more often than not, I encounter confused expressions when people ask me about my country of origin. Meeting others who know about the country, or more rarely have actually visited, feels like I’m part of a secret club at times.

So I couldn’t help getting excited when I read this great article in the New York Times recently. I kept exclaiming over words like kwacha (the local currency), chichewa (a national language), limbe (a small town), chambo (a popular fish) and others all throughout my read.

An interesting slide set of Malawi photos can be found here accompanying the article.
