Avaaz.org

Has everyone heard of this site?

For anyone who hasn’t, it’s   http://www.avaaz.org/en

I signed up for this site about a year ago when my sister forwarded it to me, and I’ve been getting regular emails from them that I actually enjoy!  It’s a super-easy way to do something small.  They send you online petitions to put your name on (just enter in your email if you subscribe) for various global issues.  Meaning ‘voice’ in various languages, Avaaz is an organization that is one of the biggest e-protest movements out there.  There are many of its kind, but I really like this one.  The last email I got from them was about saving the CBC (their emails are also good for providing background info if you’re not as caught up on issues as you’d like to be).  Here’s an article from the Economist about them, if you’re interested.

A little snippet from their site..

11,033,203 actions taken since Jan ’07…

Avaaz members respond by rapidly combining the small amounts of time or money they can give into a powerful collective force. In just hours we can send hundreds of thousands of messages to political leaders telling them to save a crucial summit on climate change , hold hundreds of rallies across the world calling for action to prevent a genocide, or donate hundreds of thousands of euros, dollars and yen to support nonviolent protest in Burma.

She is not exactly sure what she's doing at UBC (it must needs do with learning, growing?) but there she is. IR and French are her focus- but then again she is sort of unfocused in general.
