Meet Gordon Katic, a new student staff member.
The Terry Project has two new student staff members, Jessika Baroi and Gordon Katic. What follows is a biography of Gordon. Be sure to tune back soon for Jessika.
I was born in Zagreb, Croatia on June 16th, 1989. When I was four years old, my family moved to Regina, Saskatchewan. As a high school student, I took an immediate liking to journalism. I was a regular contributor to the Leader Post, our cities largest paper, in which I wrote mostly about sports and international politics. Now, I am studying philosophy and political science in my fourth year at the University of British Columbia.
Since arriving at UBC, I’ve maintained an active and critical voice on the biggest and most important issues to students–from tuition, to academics, governance, political activism and free speech. Among other things, I’ve been a weekly columnist for The Ubyssey, vice president of Allies at UBC, executive editor of the UBC Journal of International Affairs, and I’ve been involved in AMS politics. This year, in addition to the Terry Project, I’m taking up the editor-in-chief post at the Journal of International Affairs, as well as continuing my work with The Ubyssey.
I am of the mind that there is a moral imperative for university students to utilize their privileged position to help those who are so often shunned, silenced, and victimized by the mainstream. From climate change, food insecurity, poverty, and disease—these issues of global import are in fact gross inequities, and Jessika and I hope to use the Terry Project to tackle them.
